We at CoCalc: Collaborative Calculation and Data Science are beyond ecstatic to have been part of this monumental gathering. By uniting brilliant minds to collaborate and tackle the most pressing challenges in science, the very essence of CoCalc shone vividly throughout the conference. And we sincerely thank everyone who stopped by our exhibit!

What an unforgettable experience it was to join other like-minded enthusiasts virtually, as we uncovered scientific breakthroughs, engaged in stimulating discussions, and formed lasting connections in the realm of high-energy physics.

A Fusion of Knowledge: Celebrating Success at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

The APS April 2023 Meeting wouldn’t have been complete without delving into the ground-breaking fusion experiment at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). Four decades of ceaseless dedication led to the historic success in December 2022, where fusion was demonstrated for the very first time, showing more energy produced than the laser energy driving it.

As we contemplated what it would take to bring energy from a fusion reactor to the US grid, we couldn’t help but marvel at the dazzling array of knowledge shared by the distinguished speakers:

Douglas W. Larson

The recently retired Director of the National Ignition Facility (NIF) at LLNL, Doug Larson has an extensive 40-year background in engineering, laser and fusion research, and development. Under his visionary leadership, NIF successfully surpassed the ignition threshold.

Tammy Ma, Ph.D.

Dr. Tammy Ma, the Lead for the Inertial Fusion Energy Institutional Initiative at LLNL, has a noteworthy presence in the field of fusion energy and plasma research. She played significant roles as part of the team achieving fusion ignition at NIF, and chaired the DOE Basic Research Needs Workshop and Report in Inertial Fusion Energy in 2022.

Joseph Ralph, Ph.D.

A key scientist at NIF, Dr. Joseph Ralph has made remarkable contributions to inertial confinement fusion, hohlraum physics, and laser-plasma interactions. As a recipient of the 2022 APS Dawson Award in plasma physics and the Secretary Honor’s award, his insights play a pivotal role in the future of fusion energy.

A tenured physicist at Brookhaven National Laboratory, Dr. Assamagan is a prominent contributor to the ATLAS Experiment at CERN, and is renowned for his work in building diversity within the scientific community.

Asmeret Berhe, Ph.D.

The Director of the Office of Science for the U.S. Department of Energy, Dr. Berhe is an esteemed biogeochemist, serving tirelessly to ensure equity and inclusion are always at the forefront of scientific fields.

Diedra Hodges, Ph.D.

As an Associate Professor and Department Chair at Florida International University, Dr. Hodges has made significant advancements in solar energy research and global energy sustainability, amid her zealous commitment to diversity initiatives.

The James Webb Space Telescope: A New Lens to the Universe

Finally, we marveled at the early science results from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), which launched on Christmas Day 2021. From cosmology to exoplanets, the cutting-edge capabilities of JWST continue to captivate and inspire us all.

The captivating and awe-inspiring event that was the APS April 2023 Meeting has undoubtedly left us all yearning for more.
